So, I go out to my car to go to mass and what do I find but a wind up handle (like one finds on a toy but bigger and made out of cardboard and covered in glitter) sicking on to the back windshield.

I feel the unexplained urge to quote my father: "Remember Calliope, it's a car, not a toy."

So anyone want to come clean?

No, it's not a car, it's a wind up toy. The handle broke off though, so it had to be replaced.

You!!! I knew it!

It is so a car. It has an engine and four wheels and brakes and all that stuff.

I figures that it'd be your car. And I admit nothing!

That doesn't mean it's not a toy. Plenty of toys have those things.

The cardboard object was covered in glitter. Who else in this place has a glitter obsession? Hmmmm?

Whatever. It's totally a car. I would offer you a ride, but I think you hurt his feelings with your decision to make a mockery of such a fine vehicle.

it's not an obsession. it is a delicately honed appreciation.

Toys are cute and tiny and not very functional. Like your car. It is like...mini-car, just one gallon not car enough! Also, I do not need a ride.

You say toe-may-toe I say toe-mah-toe. Obsession, appreciation, we all know about your love affair.

He is cute and tiny but he is VERY functional. And environmentally friendly. And he may look tiny, but he's quite spacious on the inside.

Look, you like George out of this!

...is your car a Tardis?

I never mentioned George, you're the one who brought him up specifically.

I don't even know what that is, so probably not. It's just smart!

You're just jealous.

...you woefully ignorant child. Dr. Who!!

No I'm not because I have... man, I still have to name my new car! But he hasn't told me what it is yet. I'll know when I hear it.

And nope, I have no idea who or what that is.

Oooh, name! Not George. or Fred. That'd prompt a visit from the awkward chicken.

Dr. Who is the longest running scifi show EVER. now you need to come and watch it with me. Not from the 60's though, only say...from the restart a few years ago with the 9th Doctor.

Yeah. I don't think Fred would appreciate having a car named after him, even though he should because my car is just completely awesome. But "I'm going for a ride in Fred" would prompt some pseudo-awkward (yet entertaining) responses I suppose.

Sci-fi? I'm not really into aliens and stuff. But I guess. I was going to make something with all the apples we picked yesterday, and do homework, can we watch it on a laptop in the kitchen so I can multitask?

"Going for a ride IN Fred" vs "going for a ride ON Fred" are two very different things.

Sure. It's scifi and aliens, but not like you've seen before. And it's very British. And historical.

Oh. It's foreign. Why didn't you say so to begin with? You know my theory on accents and foreign language movies. Come on Clarice.

One day you will like something BEFORE I tell you it has an accent.

What is mass?

From: [identity profile] x-dryad.livejournal.com
It's the specific name for church services in the Catholic Church.

I don't understand what that means. Can I come and see?

You can come with me next week if you like. And I can try to explain everything to you.

Okay! Exciting! I was going to read about it but I think it would be more fun if Callie explained!

Well there's a lot to it with the history, theology, and tradition that even I don't know all about, but I will do my best.

So I should read first and then ask you to explain?

You can do that if you want. I have a few books here that you can borrow. They're pretty easy to follow. And don't worry about learning all the prayers, I have a book for that too so that you can follow along.
